Split is the second-largest city in Croatia and one of the most important cultural and historical centres on the Adriatic coast.
Located in the region of Dalmatia, Split is famous for its mix of ancient history and modern Mediterranean lifestyle. The city grew around the remarkable Diocletian’s Palace; a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 4th century by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. Today, the palace is not just a monument—it forms the living heart of the city, filled with shops, restaurants, and homes.
Split is not only a historic city but also a lively modern destination with a rich cultural identity and strong local traditions. Fans of the TV show Game of Thrones may recognize parts of Split, as scenes were filmed in the basements of Diocletian’s Palace.
Main Attractions:
- Diocletian’s Palace – The heart of Split and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this massive Roman palace was built in the 4th century for Emperor Diocletian. Today, it’s a living part of the city filled with shops, cafés, and hidden alleyways.
- Cathedral of Saint Domnius -Located inside the palace complex, this is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use. You can climb the bell tower for stunning views over Split.
- Riva Promenade – A lively waterfront lined with palm trees, restaurants, and bars—perfect for a relaxed walk or sunset drink.
- Split Archaeological Museum – One of the oldest museums in Croatia, displaying artefacts from Roman, Greek, and early Croatian history.
